Ah, men after my own heart

“A liberal is a man who will give away everything he doesn’t own.” —Frank Dane

“Every day you meet a delegation going to some convention to try and change the way of somebody else’s life.” —Will Rogers

I love that first quote. Reeks of materialism. Everything falls into two categories: owned and not-owned. Strange how the American mindset is, sometimes. Freedom = freedom to possess everything we possibly can.

I think you're missing the point. This has nothing to do with materialism. It has to do with being forced to give up something that one has rightfully and legally acquired, simply because it is "for the common good." In other words, robbing Peter to pay Paul. This is inherently wrong, and really, downright evil for a government to perpetuate.

Dane's right, in that more often than not, it is the leftist, liberal crowd that espouses this "giving" for the public good, to the detriment of the public itself. Basically, I do just fine with my charitable giving, and I don't need anyone, chiefly the government, coming in and telling me where they want my "giving" to go.
