On the Gonzales confirmation vote

Hispanic-Americans, take note. The party which claims to have your interests at heart, the party which claims to be the tolerant one, the party which claims to be racially-inclusive: only 6 of 42 Democrat Senators voted for the first-ever Hispanic Attorney General of the United States.

But the Republican President who nominated him is a racist.

Erm, that's because Gonzales has even less respect for civil liberties than Ashcroft did, and because he supports torture^H^H^H^H^H^H^H"modern interrogation techniques."

But please, let's make it a racial issue. Because we all know that was the only reason anyone could have possibly voted against him.

Oh, please. Sleep deprivation now and then isn't torture. Making enemy combatants uncomfortable isn't torture. Hell, our own prisons should be made more uncomfortable; maybe then they would be more effective deterrents to crime. That sheriff in Arizona, with the tent-city jail, has the right idea. The one thing all of his prisoners say, besides "I hate him"? "I never want to come back here again." Prison is supposed to be hard, and it can be, without being torturous.

Or did I miss the memo from Gonzales saying it was okay to pull out fingernails and apply hot irons? Oh, that was from Uday Hussein...

As for the race issue, name the President who has a more racially diverse Cabinet than any other in history, with persons of color in the highest positions they have ever held. It won't be Slick Willie.
