Here is what it comes down to: God looks at us and sees what He can make us into. We look in the mirror and see our flaws. We see our shortcomings. We see our mistakes. But God sees us and says, “I see what you can be.”

Understanding this aspect of God's character really has been an encouragement to me time and again. Even those times when I do things to honor God, serving His church, etc., to understand that I haven't scored any additional points, or added to the righteousness that has been credited "to my account" by Jesus' sacrifice, to understand that is very liberating. And conversely, WHEN I mess up (understanding that it comes as no surprise to God who knew what He was getting when He bought me)... His grace is sufficient. The agape love displayed by Christ on the cross is sufficient to "cover a multitude of sins." Hallelujah. God is good.
