Quote of the day

As seen on the Laura Ingraham web site this morning:

“At this point I would rather have a right-wing Christian decide my fate than an ACLU member.”

— Eleanor Smith, a disabled, self-described liberal agnostic lesbian

Looking at you, bureaucrats

“I think we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious.” –Thomas Jefferson

Grayism

I figured since so many people out there like to poke fun at George W.’s verbal blunders, turnabout was fair play:

“My vision is to make the most diverse state on earth, and we have people from every planet on the earth in this state.” –Gray Davis, California governor, at a press conference; quoted in Time magazine, Vol. 162, No. 13, September 29, 2003, p. 15

Regarding those intolerant, narrow-minded Christians…

“Being a lover of freedom, when the (Nazi) revolution came, I looked to the universities to defend it, knowing that they had always boasted of their devotion to the cause of truth; but no, the universities were immediately silenced. Then I looked to the great editors of the newspapers, whose flaming editorials in days gone by had proclaimed their love of freedom; but they, like the universities, were silenced in a few short weeks.
“…Only the Church stood squarely across the path of Hitler’s campaign for suppressing truth. I never had any special interest in the Church before, but now I feel a great affection and admiration for it because the Church alone has had the courage and persistence to stand for intellectual and moral freedom. I am forced to confess that what I once despised I now praise unreservedly.” –Albert Einstein, from Kampi und Zeugnis der bekennenden Kirche

Quote of the moment

bq. “Life can be a do-it-yourself project, or life can be built by your Father in Heaven. The choice is yours to make freely. Personally, I rely on the Carpenter of the cosmos to step in when I forget to ‘measure twice, cut once.'” –your humble host

Supremes, take note

“[T]he opinion which gives to the judges the right to decide what laws are constitutional and what not, not only for themselves, in their, own sphere of action, but for the Legislature and Executive also in their spheres, would make the Judiciary a despotic branch.” –Thomas Jefferson

We’re in trouble. Maybe.

“Tell me what are the prevailing sentiments that occupy the minds of your young people, and I will tell you what the character of the next generation will be.” –Edmund Burke
There is some hope from young people out there. I’m privileged to know one.
(I suppose what’s also sad is that I’ll be 33 in December and apparently no longer see myself as a “young person.”)

Quote of the moment

“I will not read it, I will not buy it, I will not subsidize Hillary Clinton’s retirement… Obviously this is a fictional version of what happened in the White House for eight years.” –Sen. Jim Bunning (R.-Ky.), on Hillary Clinton’s new book, June 11, 2003
Here, here!
Now, if anyone wishes to buy the book for me, I would be happy to review it…

Quote of the moment

“Following someone’s blog is like doing a TiVo season pass for a person.” —Rael Dornfest

Those incredibly intelligent, wonderfully sensitive celebrities

“I’m getting more famouser by the day.” –Avril Lavigne
“I quit flying five years ago. Personally, I don’t want to die with tourists.” –Billy Bob Thornton
As reported in the 5 May 2003 issue of Us Weekly.
